Free Water

June 8th, 2013

FreeSeveral years ago I volunteered for the Red Cross. I was actually trained to participate on their Disaster Action Team (DAT). I enjoyed the experience because it gave me an opportunity to interact with and meet many people that I would not have met otherwise. One of our functions as members of the DAT team was to attend parade celebrations – especially during the months of July and August when it was often hot and humid. We would set up a table to give out free bottles of water. Our table had a Red Cross banner and we often wore shirts or hats (or both) sporting the Red Cross logo.

One would imagine that this would be a welcome gesture to many – offering ice-cold bottles of water on a sweltering hot day! Surprisingly, that was not always the case. I was surprised at some of the suspicious glances I received when I offered someone a free bottle of water. Some people continued to walk barely glancing in my direction as if they feared that a sales pitch was imminent. Others commented, “Really?” or “You’re joking, right?” or “What do I have to do first?” This is not a joke, people. This is free bottle of water to quench your thirst.

That experience led me to wonder why many of us are apprehensive about receiving something that is free. I imagine much of it has to do with the old adage that nothing is really free. That statement may very well be true, but what are we missing by steering clear every free offer? The individuals who steered clear of the free water missed something vital that could quench their thirst. What are you missing by steering clear of a free offer?
