Life-Changing Words

January 2nd, 2013

Many years ago I was introduced to affirmations – words of encouragement. I was pledging for a sorority and one of our tasks was to come up with an affirmation every day. We were required to write what that affirmation meant to us and we were required to memorize the affirmation. It was during that time that I discovered the author, Jo Petty and her book “Apples of Gold”.

What a difference that book made in my life! Her scripture reference for the title of the book is Proverbs 25:11, “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver”. A word fitly spoken reminds me of Psalm 119:105, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path”.

Words are so important. Words can build us up or they can destroy us. The choice is ours regarding how we use the words that have been given to us. Jo Petty used her words to encourage others. Although researching her book was an assignment, it was a word assignment with added benefits that continue to sow into my life decades after the seed was planted.

Writers plant seeds every day. We may not immediately know who we’ve touched with our words. Our words linger in the hearts, minds, and souls of others long after the ink has dried. As writers, we have an obligation to build a foundation with our words. The strength of that foundation is well within our control.

Will your words strengthen someone today? Will you encourage someone by letting them know that they are not alone? Will you remind someone that while time may not heal all pain, that time will dull the pain until it’s manageable? Jo Petty didn’t know that I needed to read her words of encouragement. I didn’t even know that I needed words of encouragement. Circumstances led me to her book.

Someone is waiting for your book to be completed because your book contains the very word that they need to see and hear. We don’t know who waits for that word. We just know that there is a word to be shared. Don’t hold back your word any longer. Someone is waiting…
